Importance of Wellness Exams Routine yearly physical examinations with your veterinarian are of utmost importance. Even though some vaccinations are not necessary on an annual basis, it is best for your pet to have a thorough exam: Eyes and ears, dental exam, skin, heart and lungs, abdomen, lymph nodes, and musculoskeletal. We often find problems such as ear infections, dental disease/painful teeth, and heart murmurs on a routine physical. In addition, bloodwork and urine testing may be recommended, especially over the age of 7 years, as this is the age at which we consider our pets to be entering their “senior” years. Studies have shown that as many as 23 % of senior pets have an underlying disease, even though they appear to be just fine. Arthritis is a common problem in older pets and there are joint supplements and medications to help ease the joint pain. We all want our pets to live long and happy lives. They enrich our lives!!
