Nutrition Counseling

All Paws Animal Clinic carries a variety of dog and cat foods that are tailored to meet your pet’s daily nutritional requirements. Dr. Patty has been feeding her own dogs Hill’s ® Science Diet ® and Prescription Diet ® for 25 years. Hill’s Pet Nutrition, established in 1948, has a commitment to providing the highest quality of pet nutrition and actively supports companion animals everywhere as well as the veterinary profession and animal shelters. They employ over 150 dedicated veterinarians, PhD. Nutritionists and food scientists to make the highest quality of pet foods available.

The Prescription Diet ® line is specially formulated for certain types of medical conditions:

Prescription Diet ® a/d ® Canine/Feline – A high protein, highly palatable food used for patients recovering from illnesses or surgery that just don’t have a good appetite. This food has high levels of amino acids, vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and minerals which are beneficial in recovery.

Prescription Diet ® b/d ® Canine – Many experts agree that the aging process is primarily caused by unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals, a normal by-product of energy produced by the body. These free radicals cause cell damage over time. Decreased brain function can manifest in the senior pet as behavior changes (house soiling, not greeting family members, sleeps more during the day than at night, wanders or paces, stares into space or at walls). Hill’s ® Prescription Diet ® b/d ® Canine is enhanced with a unique blend of antioxidants in combination with other important nutrients to help maintain healthy brain function in older dogs.

Prescription Diet ® c/d ® – Both dogs and cats can suffer from chronic lower urinary tract infections (cystitis). There are many factors which can cause this problem, and one of those is related to high levels of certain minerals in the food which may cause crystal or stone formation in the bladder. Prescription Diet ® c/d ® promotes a healthy bladder environment.

Prescription Diet ® d/d ® – Many dogs and cats suffer from allergy to certain ingredients in their food. The most common proven allergens in the dog are beef, chicken, milk, eggs, corn, wheat, and soy. In the cat, the most common allergens are fish, beef, milk and milk products. Hill’s ® has developed “novel protein” and carbohydrate diets just for this purpose such as: Venison, Salmon, Duck and Lamb formulas as well as Rice and Egg.

Prescription Diet ® h/d ® Canine – Patients suffering from congestive heart failure need a diet low in sodium which will help to reduce the heart’s workload and helps control signs of fluid retention.

Prescription Diet ® i/d ® – Many patients suffer from intermittent or chronic gastrointestinal problems. Prescription Diet ® i/d ® is low in fat and highly digestible.

Prescription Diet ® j/d ™ Canine – As animals age, they can develop arthritis, just as humans do. Prescription Diet ® j/d ™ Canine contains Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) to turn off the genes that cause cartilage damage, Omega-3 fatty acids to help reduce mediators that cause inflammation, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate to provide building blocks for cartilage repair, and L-carnitine to help maintain optimum body weight and reduce additional stress on bones and joints.

Prescription Diet ® k/d ® – When the filtering units of the body begin to give out (the kidneys), waste materials from the blood are not properly excreted. Signs of kidney failure do not appear until more than two-thirds of kidney function has been lost. Prescription Diet ® k/d ® has reduced protein, higher amounts of fiber and low levels of phosphorus to reduce kidney workload and low salt and enhanced fatty acids to slow the progression of kidney disease.

Prescription Diet ® l/d ® – The liver is the largest internal organ in a pet’s body. With about 1500 different functions, the liver plays a major role in the digestion and conversion of nutrients, removal of toxic substances, synthesis of key components of the blood and storage of vitamins and minerals. Prescription Diet ® l/d ® has high-quality protein, highly digestible carbohydrates, and key vitamins and minerals allowing for natural regeneration of liver tissue.

Prescription Diet ® r/d ® – Unfortunately, obesity is a major problem in pets these days as well as humans. In fact, 60 million dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese. Left untreated, obesity can lead to many problems, including heart disease, arthritis and joint problems and diabetes. Prescription Diet ® r/d ® is low in calories, specially formulated to help your pet feel full, and fortified with L-Carnitine to help your pet convert fat into energy while maintaining lean muscle mass.

Prescription Diet ® s/d ® – Those pets suffering from a type of bladder stone(s) called a struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate), can actually have dissolution of the stones in a relatively short period of time if fed Prescription Diet ® s/d ® (and this food alone). This is the only type of bladder stone which can be dissolved by a diet which means that surgery to remove the stones is not necessary.

Prescription Diet ® t/d ® – By the age of three, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show some sigh of a dental problem. Maintaining oral health is important because gum disease can cause pain and may possibly lead to more serious illnesses. Prescription Diet ® t/d ® works like a toothbrush as the inside of the kibble is designed to gently slide plaque of the tooth as the pet bites into the kibble.

Prescription Diet ® z/d ® – Adverse reactions to certain ingredients in food may lead to dermatological or gastrointestinal problems (see Prescription Diet ® d/d ®). Food allergies can occur at any age and develop over time. Most adverse reactions to food are caused by large, intact proteins that the body’s immune system interprets as allergens. In the past, pets with adverse reactions to food were fed homemade recipes or novel proteins (proteins the pet has never eaten). Today, the latest innovation in pet food uses the process of hydrolyzation to break down protein molecules to a size that doesn’t allow an allergic response. The same process has been used for years in special formulas for infants who are sensitive or allergic to milk protein. Prescription Diet ® z/d ® is highly digestible.
