Why is my pet scratching all of the time?
Have you ever noticed that your cat or dog is chewing or scratching at themselves in excess? There are many causes for itchiness (also termed pruritis) in animals! The most common cause is a reaction to the flea bite. Some dogs and cats are more sensitive to the “saliva” of the flea and react so intensely that they will develop sores or scabs. Bacteria that are normally present in the top layer of the skin become imbedded in the lower layers of the skin (where they do not belong!) causing a “dermatitis” or skin infection. Dermatitis can be caused secondarily by many factors including external parasites (fleas, sarcoptic and demodectic mange mites), a skin fungus termed “ringworm”, allergies to pollens, molds, etc., and even allergies to food ingredients. No matter what the cause of the itching, the skin infection is typically treated with a medication to reduce the itchy feeling and an antibiotic to cure the bacterial infection (the bacteria produce substances that make the itch worse!). Medicated baths and topical sprays help to make the skin feel better as well. The cause of the itching must be addressed ie: Using flea and tick control products on a monthy basis. The best products on the market today are Frontline, Advantix, and Revolution and can be obtained through your veterinarian.
Some skin infections that have gone on too long will require a treatment for a secondary yeast infection (known as Malessezia dermatitis). Malessezia is extremely itchy and intensifies the skin problem. Antifungal medications and shampoos may be necessary in this instance. So if you are losing sleep because of that scratching and chewing noise “Fluffy” is making, consult your veterinarian to find the best way to set the skin problem straight!!
